Camping

We'd been having somewhat of a stressful summer because of Charlie's research (which I'll talk about a little later), so we decided to take a camping trip up to the mountains. Charlie got a tent for Christmas, and we really wanted to try it out, so we made it an overnight trip. There was one place in particular that Charlie wanted to go fishing. So we headed up in that direction, but it seemed like every time we would get close, this is what we would run into:

Roads covered in snow. We actually got to see the lake at one point. Too bad it was still too far off to get to. We found a camp site. It was quite a feat considering it was right around the 4th of July. It was pretty muddy because there had been a few storms recently, but we found a relatively dry area. Here's the tent. It was really easy to set up and fit all of us perfectly. It's a good thing it's waterproof, because it started raining on us.
Charlie had a fun time trying to get a fire going to cook dinner. All the wood around was soaked and we couldn't get it going, even dousing it with lighter fluid. Luckily, we'd bought a little bit of wood before we left, so we had at least a little bit of dry wood.
Charlie cooked us dinner for the night with foil dinners and a fish he caught earlier (hence why his pants are soaked). Because of all the storms, there were plenty of puddles for Sam to play in. Had I know it would have been so wet, I definitely would have brought more clothes for him. He went through everything I packed before dinner was even done.

We were told that one of the roads was closed because the storms had damaged the road. That was sure an understatement. We walked down to see it. These pictures don't do it justice.
It washed out the entire road, hauling boulders the size of cars and uprooting trees. It was pretty massive.

The next morning, we went to a pond near our campsite so Charlie could get some fishing out of his system. That is one thing that Sam got from his dad, a joy of fishing. He had a ton of fun throwing the line out and reeling it back in. He even caught a few. He would have caught more, but he reeled it in too fast for the fish to get on, and wouldn't let us have the pole to put more bait on. Oh, well, as long as he's having a good time, right?
It ended too soon, and before we knew it, we were heading back down that mountain to face reality once again.
