I won't try to explain to you why I call them Kitty Moments (only one or two people would understand what this meant. I've tried to explain it before, and I think you just had to be there), but I'll tell you what they are.
A kitty moment occurs when someone says something or does something, which almost instantaneously triggers a series of thoughts in your head, until your thoughts finally end somewhere, usually nowhere near where it started. I think pretty much everyone has experienced this. So here are some of my recent kitty moments. The problem is that a lot of times, the moment isn't complete; I can't remember some of the details. So if you remember this, feel free to elaborate :)
Kitty Moment #1 The Ugly Dress
It was either 2002 or 2003 I think. We were at play practice that evening. We were going to be performing "If a Man Answers" in the next day or two, so tonight was a dress rehearsal. In this particular scene, one girl (played by Mary) is coming to visit her friend (played by Tess). I can't recall specifics, but at some point, Mary's line was something to the effect of ,"Wow, that's a beautiful dress!" Now, anybody who has seen the selection of costumes available for these plays knows that occasionally, you have very little to choose from. Because of this, Tess was left with, to be completely honest, a very ugly dress. I believe these opinions were voiced, but we were told that there was really no other choice. So, as the scene progressed, Mary knocked on the door and Tess opened it. Mary came in and began to deliver her line: "Wow, that's a beauti---" But that's as far as she got before she burst out laughing, as did everyone else watching. Let's face it, that dress had it coming. John Lee yelled out, "Fine!! We'll find something else for you to wear!!"
Kitty Moment #2 Foul-Mouth Sister
Usually, my parents' garden was planted in rows, like most gardens are usually planted. But one year, we decided to plant it in sections, for lack of a better term. We planted each type of veggie in groups, then built dams around them. I remember our cousins being over this particular day. The dams kept breaking, and all the water was gushing out. My siblings, cousins, and I were trying to fix them as they broke, but they were breaking all over the place. My cousin Erik finally figured some strategy to fix them and keep them together. One by one, he fixed them. Then another one broke. He said something like, "What do we do now?!?" and my sister replied, "I don't know! You're the dam expert!" Everyone froze in their tracks and slowly turned their heads toward my sister, jaws dropping to the ground. She soon realized what she said and tried to explain she meant that he was just really good at fixing the dams, she wasn't trying to swear, but the damage had already been done.
Kitty Moment #3 Watering the Lawn
Occasionally, my dad would ask my mom to water the lawn while he was at work. Which is what happened on this particular day. Before leaving for work, my dad asked my mom to water the lawn that day. I don't remember if she just forgot, or if she had heard that it was going to rain that day, but it didn't get done that morning. The conversation probably went a little something like this:
"Debbie, I need you to water the lawn today."
"OK."
(My dad comes home for lunch) "Did you water the lawn?"
"Oh, shoot I forgot. I'll do it this afternoon."
(My dad calls a couple hours later) :Did you water the lawn?"
"No it's supposed to rain."
"It still needs watered."
Perhaps he calls a couple more times. Then it starts raining. That's when my mom decides to water the lawn. In the pouring rain. I think she was trying to make a point or something, but I don't remember. I do remember the funny looks that people would give to her as they drove by. Sure, you see lawns being watered in the rain quite a bit, but those are usually automatic sprinklers. You don't usually see a woman standing on the lawn with a hose in her hand in the middle of the pouring rain.
And those are my Kitty Moments for today.
